The world according to Rome

Thus we see in the Roman world a particular concept of the city. By this interpretation, cities did not grow organically, from hamlet, to village, to town and so on. Instead, a city was founded by design, at a carefully selected location, for reasons that might be economic, military or cultural. Cities were remarkably similar, wherever in the Greco-Roman world they were located, and contained many of the same amenities. While the empire stood this was a highly successful model, and many Roman foundations remain thriving cities today. However, by the fourth century AD the world was changing, and many of the lost and forgotten cities in the fourth and final section of this book are those which failed to survive the transition.
